Kishinchand Chellaram
(hence the KC initials in our company logo), the
late Founder, started his business from a textile
shop in Chennai (Madras) in 1916. With an expansion
plan in place and the first overseas office set up
in Yokohama in 1918, the next decade saw the
Kishinchand Chellaram Group become one of the
leading trading companies in West Africa with
branches across four continents.
With an international
presence in retail, the Chellarams brand became
equivalent to Leadership, Quality, Reliability, and
Integrity as represented in our company logo
(described below). Over time, Chellarams moved from
retailing into wholesaling and manufacturing. The
opening of Chellarams in The Gambia in 1958 was an
important part of the Group’s international
expansion.
